4 Questions to Ask a Fencing Contractor Before Hiring Them

Whether you’re installing a new fence around your property or finally getting around to making much-needed repairs, you’ll want to ensure you select the right contractor for the job. Here are five questions that’ll help you make the right choice.

1. Do you have a brick-and-mortar office?

While having a physical office isn’t in itself a guarantee of quality work and professionalism, it at least indicates the contractor is likely to have administrative staff. Those without support staff are more likely to struggle with responding to questions and requests in a timely manner and may also have issues when it comes to getting permits.

2. Has your business changed names?

This question serves two purposes. First, if the business changed its name because it was acquired by or merged with another company, you’ll be able to find reviews about both the old and new company. Second, a name change can sometimes be a warning sign that the company is trying to distance itself from a less than stellar reputation.

3. Are you fully insured?

An uninsured contractor may be cheaper, but the potential costs aren’t worth the savings. Experienced contractors know that accidents can happen even when every reasonable precaution is taken, and they’ll make certain that they’re fully insured. If you hire a contractor without insurance, you’ll be liable for any accident that occurs on your property.

4. Can you handle permits?

Different municipalities have different bylaws and building codes, so you’ll want to make sure you hire a contractor who can secure the required permits. If a contractor is willing to provide assistance with the permit application process, it’s likely that they’re going to be reliable throughout the entire project.
